Pinterest Settings vs an Extension: What Each Can Hide

Pinterest’s own settings can turn down AI images by topic, give feedback on individual pins, and limit the data used to pick your ads. They can’t remove ads, shopping pins or suggestion blocks, and they can’t hide pins by keyword or by website. Those need a browser extension, which only works on a computer.
Here’s the full breakdown, with sources for what Pinterest offers.
What Pinterest’s own settings can do
Turn AI images down by topic
Under Refine your recommendations → AI content, Pinterest has a Show AI content switch and per-topic switches. Pinterest announced the topic controls in October 2025 for categories like art, beauty, home decor and fashion, and added food and drink that December. It applies to eligible image pins, and the controls reduce AI content rather than remove it. More in what the See fewer AI pins setting really does.
Give feedback on a single pin
The … menu on a home feed pin has See fewer like this (or See less), and tells you why the pin was recommended, per Pinterest’s help page. It’s a signal to the recommendation system, not a filter: similar pins can still show up.
Stop recommendations based on your activity
The Activity tab under Refine your recommendations stops recommendations based on pins you’ve engaged with or viewed (Pinterest’s guide). See how to reset your Pinterest home feed for the other steps.
Limit how ads are targeted
Settings → Privacy and data has switches like Use info from sites you visit and Use of partner info (Pinterest’s guide). They change which ads you get, not how many.
Hide an ad, block an advertiser
Pinterest’s ads help page says you can hide ads you’re not interested in and block up to 1,000 advertiser profiles. It also says: “While you can’t turn off ads completely, you can limit the kinds of information we use to pick which ads you see.”
Block an account
You can block any Pinterest account, which stops it from following you or interacting with your pins. Whether it also removes that account’s pins from your recommendations is something we cover in how to block an account or website on Pinterest.
What Pinterest’s settings can’t do
- Remove ads. There’s no ad-free option, paid or free.
- Hide shopping pins or blocks like “Shop the look”. There’s no setting for them.
- Hide suggestion modules like “Popular on Pinterest” or “More ideas”.
- Filter by keyword. You can’t tell Pinterest “never show me pins about X”.
- Block a website. You can block accounts and advertisers, but not every pin that links to, say, temu.com.
- Guarantee anything. Every Pinterest control is feedback to a recommendation system, so results drift over time.
What a browser extension adds
A browser extension runs in your desktop browser and changes the page after Pinterest sends it. That means it can remove things outright instead of asking Pinterest to show less of them.
Feed Cleaner is the extension we make. It isn’t affiliated with Pinterest. The free version:
- Removes promoted pins on your home feed, in search and on pin pages, in 25+ languages and on 22 Pinterest country domains.
- Hides shopping pins, video pins and suggestion blocks, each with its own switch.
- Closes the gap each one leaves, or keeps a blank card, or swaps in a pin from your feed: your choice.
Feed Cleaner Pro adds the filters Pinterest doesn’t have: a keyword filter, blocking any website or account, hiding every pin Pinterest labels as AI modified, plus custom columns and full-size image tools.
The trade-off: extensions only work in a desktop browser. They don’t work in the Pinterest phone apps.
Side by side
| What you want to hide | Pinterest settings | Feed Cleaner (free) | Feed Cleaner Pro |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ads and promoted pins | No, only limit targeting | Yes | Yes |
| Shopping pins, “Shop the look” | No | Yes | Yes |
| Suggestion blocks | No | Yes | Yes |
| AI images | Turn down by topic | No | Every labeled AI pin |
| A topic you’re tired of | “See fewer”, not guaranteed | No | Keyword filter |
| A specific website | No | No | Yes |
| A specific account | Block, mainly a safety tool | No | Yes |
| Works in the phone app | Yes | No | No |
Use both
The two don’t conflict. Pinterest’s settings shape what gets recommended in the first place, on every device, including the app. An extension cleans up what’s left on your computer. Tune your feed with Pinterest’s controls, and let the extension handle the ads and clutter those controls can’t touch.
FAQ
Is there a Pinterest Premium with no ads?
No. We couldn’t find any paid ad-free plan, and Pinterest’s help center says ads can’t be turned off completely.
Do Pinterest’s settings sync between the app and the website?
Settings like Refine your recommendations and Privacy and data belong to your account, so they apply wherever you sign in. Browser extensions only affect the browser they’re installed in.
